Banasan promotes precision fumigation with drones in Magdalena, benefiting small-scale banana producers.

Magdalena, Colombia – December 3, 2024. The international banana trader C.I. Banasan announced the implementation of precision fumigation with drones in banana plantations in the Magdalena department, marking a milestone in the sector’s technological and sustainable transformation.

Currently, 500 hectares of banana plantations already benefit from this technology, with the goal of reaching 100% coverage in the coming years. This initiative aims to address one of the main challenges faced by small-scale producers: the high costs of traditional aerial fumigation, which increased expenses by up to 40% due to terrain atomization.

In Magdalena, 350 small-scale producers manage 900 hectares of banana plantations, and thanks to the innovation led by Banasan, positive impacts are being generated across three key areas:

  • Environmental protection: drone fumigation is more precise, reduces the dispersion of agrochemicals, and minimizes risks to strategic ecosystems and water bodies near the plantations.
  • Cost reduction: producers have achieved savings of up to 40%, allowing them to reinvest resources in their farms and strengthen their competitiveness.
  • Community empowerment: Banasan works with 309 small farmers, promoting not only production efficiency but also the well-being of their families and communities.

“With this technology, we are taking an important step toward the sustainability of bananas in Magdalena. Drones not only represent innovation but also a real opportunity to improve the profitability of small producers and protect the ecosystems of our region.” said Estefanía Lagos, Sustainability Director at Banasan.

Through precision drone fumigation, Banasan reaffirms its leadership in adopting technologies that promote a more sustainable, competitive, and environmentally responsible banana sector.
