Banasan will implement Colombia’s first aquifer recharge and recovery pilot with support from the Government of the Netherlands.

Magdalena, Colombia. February 12, 2025 – With the support of the Government of the Netherlands, the international banana trading company C.I. Banasan announced the launch of Colombia’s first aquifer recharge and recovery pilot, a pioneering project aimed at strengthening water security in the Magdalena Department.

The initiative will take place in the Frío and Sevilla river basin and will span two years, during which it is expected to achieve water savings of 15% to 20% on banana farms, one of the most important productive sectors for the local economy.

The plan integrates cutting-edge technology and has the technical support of leading international hydrogeological research institutions such as Deltares and KWR, along with the participation of local partners including the Fundación Herencia Ambiental Caribe, Corpamag, and the Irrigation Districts.

The total investment, exceeding €280,000, will be co-financed by the Government of the Netherlands, Banasan, and Corporagros, combining monetary and in-kind contributions.

During the pilot phase, specialized infrastructure will be installed, maintenance processes will be implemented, and a roadmap will be defined for future scaling to other farms, economic sectors, and communities facing challenges related to water scarcity.

“This initiative represents a decisive step toward sustainability in a region where water has become a critical resource,” said Estefanía Lagos, Banasan’s Sustainability Director.

“With the support of the Government of the Netherlands and the expertise of our partners, we are establishing a replicable model that can benefit communities, small producers, and various economic sectors,” she added.

With this project, Banasan reaffirms its commitment to sustainability and innovation, contributing to the responsible development of the banana industry and the wellbeing of communities in Magdalena.
